History

Chambord began as a grand vision of King François I in 1519. More than a royal residence, it was designed to showcase his power and Renaissance ideals. Inspired by Italian architecture, the castle blended medieval French styles with revolutionary innovations, possibly influenced by Leonardo da Vinci. However, despite its size—440 rooms and 282 fireplaces—François I spent only a few weeks there, using it mainly as a hunting lodge. Over the centuries, Chambord saw periods of neglect, royal refurbishments, and even occupation by German forces during World War II. Today, it stands as a testament to artistic ambition, architectural genius, and centuries of French history.

Architecture

Chambord’s architecture is a mix of French medieval design and Renaissance creativity. The chateau’s symmetrical layout, soaring towers, and intricate facades reflect its dual identity—both a fortress and a palace. The double-helix staircase, attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, is its most famous feature, allowing two people to ascend and descend without meeting. The castle’s vast rooftop terraces create a skyline of sculpted chimneys and lantern towers, offering panoramic views of the estate.

Inside, vaulted ceilings, detailed carvings, and grand halls highlight the craftsmanship that makes Chambord one of the most remarkable architectural achievements of the French Renaissance.

Highlights

The “magic” staircase

One of Chambord's most iconic features, this double-helix staircase allows two people to ascend and descend without ever crossing paths. Often attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, it's an impressive example of Renaissance engineering and a unique visitor experience.

Sculpted decorations

Chambord's architecture is full of finely crafted sculpted details.. Look closely at the walls, ceilings, and towers—over 300 salamanders, François I’s emblem, are carved throughout the castle. Along with fleur-de-lis patterns and Renaissance motifs, these reflect the king’s vision of grandeur.

Permanent collections

Chambord houses over 4,500 historical artifacts, paintings, and tapestries. Highlights include 17th-century furniture, restored royal apartments, and the large-scale equestrian painting of Louis XIV, reinforcing Chambord’s royal legacy.

The gardens

Recreated in 2017 from 18th-century designs, Chambord’s formal French gardens feature geometric flower beds and sculpted hedges. They cover 6.5 hectares and offer a spectacular view of the castle’s facade, especially in spring when they’re in full bloom.

Enclosed forests

Chambord sits in a 13,000-hectare estate, the largest enclosed park in Europe. Originally a royal hunting ground, it’s home to wild deer and boar. A dedicated observatory lets visitors spot animals in their natural habitat.

Vegetable gardens

Restored in 2019, Chambord’s organic vegetable gardens span five acres, supplying produce for the chateau’s restaurants. Rooted in Renaissance traditions, they showcase heritage crops and sustainable farming techniques.

The Chambord Vineyard

Reviving a centuries-old tradition, Chambord’s vineyard produces limited batches of organic white and red wine. Located on the castle grounds, it follows traditional Loire Valley winemaking methods and offers tastings during select events.

Rooftop terraces

Surrounded by 11 towers, 282 chimneys, and sculpted spires, the fairytale terraces offer a closer look at the château’s striking skyline and sweeping views of the gardens and forest.

The Chapel

Built in the late 16th century, Chambord’s chapel was meant for François I but wasn’t completed during his lifetime. Its high vaulted ceiling and Renaissance design make it one of the chateau’s most impressive interior spaces.

Cultural events

Chambord hosts year-round events, from Renaissance music concerts in the chapel to equestrian shows in the stables. The chateau also stages historical reenactments, bringing the past to life through live performances.
