Explore Chateau d'Angers

Nestled amongst rocky ledges, Château d'Angers is one of the truly awe-inspiring fortress-style châteauxs in the Loire Valley. Inhabited by Romans till the 10th century, the castle that we know today was built by Louis IX in the 13th century. Towards the middle of the 14th century, the now world-renowned Apocalypse Tapestry depicting stories from the medieval Book of Revelation was commissioned. At 140 meters, the tapestry was the longest in the world at the time; however, only about 100 meters of it remain today. There are 90 total scenes on the tapestry at Château d'Angers, which is also the oldest French medieval tapestry in the world.

Tapestry of the Apocalypse

The most fascinating attraction at the monument is the famed Apocalypse tapestry. Made in the late 14th century, the tapestry is over 100 meters long and 4.50 meters high. The tapestry depicts a plethora of real-life and mythical animals including lambs, horses, eagles, seven-headed lions, manticores, and demons. Apart from the Tapestry of the Apocalypse, the collection includes over a hundred tapestry pieces that are conserved and exhibited at the castle or the cathedral occasionally.

Architecture

The castle’s architecture is truly remarkable. Built from slate and limestone mined from the Loire valley, the castle is lined with sleek black and white striped walls. As the castle was used as a defensive front, a massive defensive ditch has also been built around it. The northern wall acts as the main entrance now, with the eastern curtain wall planted with gardens. Featuring 17 towers, the massive medieval fortification is truly a mesmerizing work of medieval architecture.

Gardens

The gardens at Château d'Angers are almost surreal. They cover a majority of the castle and are part of a sustainable development approach. An avenue of lime trees pruned into cats' heads creates a path towards the gatehouse, while the main garden showcases pruned squares lawns, box trees, and yews to create a tunnel. There is also a well, topiary, and a rose bush near the Governor's house, which is situated next to the main castle.
